Update: Vienna trail-to-Metro project added to regional-funding mix

Must Read

[Update: The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission on June 2 agreed to include the Vienna trails project as part of the group approved for funding in the coming cycle.]

A $2.2 million project connecting local trails to the Vienna Metro station is among the projects slated for June 2 approval by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission board of directors in its latest round of “Commuter Choice” funding in the Interstate 66 corridor.

The project had not, initially, been on the list of six regional projects proposed by commission staff for funding, but additional funding was found, which allowed it to be included.

Funds for the projects come from tolling on the interstate highway inside the Capital Beltway.

Other projects slated for funding include:

• $2.5 million for improvements to support the Manassas Park Virginia Railway Express (VRE) parking garage.

• $4.5 million to support construction of a second entrance to the Ballston-MU Metro station in Arlington.

• $2.56 million for renewal of OmniRide bus service from Gainesville in Prince William County to the Pentagon and to Navy Yard.

• $1.23 million for renewal of Fairfax Connector bus service from the Vienna Metro station to the Pentagon.

• $950,000 for renewal of OmniRide bus service from Haymarket to Rosslyn.

• $650,000 to subsidize commuter-bus fares to and from Prince William County.

Administration costs will add about a half-million dollars to the total cost.
