Vienna finalizes street-renaming effort with new signage

Must Read

Vienna officials have replaced street signs on the former Wade Hampton Drive with new ones reading “Liberty Lane.”

The switch was done in early July “with little fanfare” (as requested by residents), town officials said in the government’s monthly newsletter.

The short street was known until Lewis Street, S.W., until 1962, when it was renamed to honor Confederate Gen. Wade Hampton, whose cavalry unit had camped in the area in late 1862 under the direction of J.E.B. Stuart.

The Vienna Town Council, after having agreed to rename the street, selected “Liberty Lane” in February from among five options presented by an ad-hoc committee.
