The Vienna Town Council on Jan. 24 agreed to spend $320,442 to replace the elevator at Vienna Town Hall.
The original elevator, built and installed by Dover Elevator Co. in 1997, has experienced some ups and downs and now town officials are ready to take things to the next level.
(Come on, you knew some elevator jokes were coming.)
The equipment is obsolete and was the subject of an emergency repair late last year following an inspection violation, town officials said. That work, performed by Kone Inc., included installation of a sump pump, waterproofing and replacement of parts rusted by water incursion.
Instead of a hydraulic-oil-lift system similar to the original elevator’s, Kone Inc. now will install a machine-room-less elevator, which town officials said will operate more smoothly, eliminate the need for an under-stairs machine room, and reduce installation and maintenance costs.
The contract’s price includes a 10-percent contingency allowance.
