What a highly successful championship and near championship day it was, on Saturday, Nov. 13, for high-school teams and individual athletes from the Sun Gazette’s coverage areas.
On Saturday, two teams won Virginia High School League Class 6 state titles, and two more finished second. On the same day, another private-school team won a state crown, with another two taking second.
It was hard to keep track of it all.
The two VHSL team champions Nov. 13 were the Oakton High School boys cross country team and the Yorktown High girls field hockey squad, winning crowns a little more than five hours apart. The two VHSL teams that finished second in the state Nov. 13 were the McLean High girls and Yorktown boys cross country squads.
In the Division I state private-school girls volleyball tournament Nov. 13, the Flint Hill Huskies of Oakton won the crown, downing the Bishop O’Connell Knights of Arlington in the title match.
In Division I private-school girls tennis Nov. 13, the Potomac School Panthers finished second in the state tourney.
Individually on Nov. 13, Yorktown senior Owen McArdle won the VHSL Class 6 boys cross country championship, with Thais Rolly of McLean second in the Class 6 girls race.
Not a bad day at all.
