Sports Notebook: Strong starts

Must Read

With high-school basketball teams in the Sun Gazette coverage areas not playing this weekend because of the Christmas holiday, a number of those squads are off to strong starts, including the undefeated Oakton Cougars (8-0) and Potomac School Panthers (5-0) on the girls side.

Other strong girls teams are the Langley Saxons and Madison Warhawks with 7-1 records, the Yorktown Patriots at 5-2 and the 6-3 McLean Highlanders. The Flint Hill Huskies are 4-3.

On the boys side, the Marshall Statesmen are 7-1, Madison is 6-2, Langley 5-2 and the Bishop O’Connell Knights 4-3.

Seasons will continue with holiday tournaments this coming week, then league play begins in full after the New Year’s holiday.

It will be interesting to follow which of those teams continue to do well in the new year.

We’ll see what happens.
