There is a high possibility five or more teams from the Sun Gazette coverage areas could be playing in Virginia High School League Class 6 state tournament championship games by week’s end.
Entering some of tonight’s state semifinals, five or more teams have the possibility of advancing to the girls and boys state finals, in softball, soccer and lacrosse. Including tennis, girls and boys teams could advance as well, making that number maybe as many as seven or eight teams playing in state finals.
That’s the highest number ever of teams advancing that far from the area, compared to past years. Yorktown, McLean and Langley high schools could have three teams each playing in state finals and Madison and Oakton highs maybe two each.
Obviously, there will be state championship teams crowned from the paper’s coverage areas by week’s end.
We’ll keep track of it all.
