Sports Notebook: Short season

Must Read

Are there any seasons at any level of sports shorter than the local outdoor summertime swimming and diving campaigns? Probably not. The regular dual-meet seasons last just five weeks. Blink and they’re over – five and done.

There are no playoffs. The teams with the best records are the division champions. If teams tie for first, they are co or tri-champions.

The final week five is coming up this weekend, Saturday, July 16, for some of the local swim leagues. The dive season ends Tuesday night, July 19 for Northern Virginia Swimming League teams.

The seasons are short, well, because school in these parts runs until June. Then August is the big, or used to be, vacation month. Plus, school now starts in these parts in late August.

So the summer swim and dive regular seasons are squeezed into June and July, for just five weeks, after just a couple of weeks of leadup practice.

Five weeks of fun and done.
