Sports Notebook: Region dynasty

Must Read

When it comes to a sports dynasty, the Oakton High School boys cross country team certainly qualifies, that is if winning five straight region championships meets the definition.

Oakton won a fifth straight crown last week in what was somewhat of a surprise, which again confirms the team has become a region power. This fall, the Oakton team, which won district, region and state crowns last season, has many new and less experienced runners among its top seven. So Oakton wasn’t expecting to win a region crown again, contend certainly, but not win.

But the team came together quickly, ran its best of the season at the region meet and took advantage of runner-up South Lakes missing its top runner because of an injury. With a number of young runners on this fall’s team, the Cougars’ region rule could continue against next season in 2022.

We’ll see what happens.
