Sports Notebook: Overlapping sports

Must Read

Another example of the crazy local sports world as a result of the pandemic is how three different sports have overlapped this June when that usually is not the case.

On June 19 the summer season began for the Northern Virginia Swimming League, as well as the local District 17 American Legion baseball campaign. In addition, the public high-school sports seasons are still ongoing, with state playoff competition concluding this week.

Normally, those three seasons don’t all overlap at the same time. The high-school campaign is over before the NVSL starts. The Legion schedule normally starts in early June, before the NVSL opens and as high-school ball is about finished.

This year, because of the pandemic and for different reasons, the high-school seasons were extended two to three weeks, the NVSL began a week early, and Legion baseball opened nearly three weeks later than normal.

Other sports schedules were adjusted because of the pandemic. Beginning with the fall season, hopefully all will be back to normal.

We’ll see what happens.
