Sports Notebook: On the move?

Must Read

Each year, once another summertime Northern Virginia Swimming League season is complete, the biggest question about the next year’s campaign begins to be asked. Which teams will move and up and down in the 17 divisions of the 102 team league?

Teams always are switched around after each season based on their win-loss records. Division champions most often climb at least one division. Teams that finish last or near the bottom often drop one or two places. Teams finishing in the middle of the pack often stay put, but can move as well.

The league doesn’t hold its involved realignment process until March or April. So there is much time to speculate those moves.

The biggest question regarding the 2023 season will be which teams will move up to Division 1, and which will fall out of that spot, if any?

Likely, the Langley Club Wildthings will move down after finishing 0-5 in Division 1 this summer, and the Highlands Swim Club Whomping Turtles (1-4) could do the same.

Then, which teams will take over those Division 1 spots? Certainly the McLean Marlins, which won Division 2 with a 5-0 mark, are one possibility and maybe Fair Oaks as well, second at 4-1 in Division 3.

Another possible Division 1 candidate is Old Keene Mill, the Division 3 champion with a 5-0 record and a team that has been on the rise for a number of summers in a row now.

And how about the bottom Division 17? The 2022 champion Springfield (5-0) certainly will climb out of the cellar, with Broyhill Crest (0-5) in Division 16, likely to fall into 17.

In between Division 1 and 17 there also will be scads of movements, with teams climbing and falling.

We’ll see what happens in March or April.
