Sports Notebook: Oakton tennis

Must Read

The boys tennis team at Oakton High School has a different situation than many rivals in the area and throughout Virginia.

At many schools, players who try out for the boys tennis team make the squad no matter their ability, because there are no cuts. Some teams even struggle to fill an entire lineup for matches.

Not at Oakton. This spring, the team had 17 players, with three managers who were last cuts from the team. And there were a lot of players cut, about 30 in all. Some 50 players tried out for the Cougars’ squad.

Longtime Oakton coach Betsy Tyskowski (14 seasons) said it took about a week to make all the cuts and have a final roster for the 2022 spring campaign.

With that many players trying out, there is obviously a lot of talent on the team. Oakton proved as much by winning a second straight Virginia High School League Class 6 state tournament championship this spring. It was the team’s third state title total, all coming since 2015, with a state runner-up in 2017.

Yes, Oakton tennis is different than at other schools.
