It was quite a performance turned in by local girls and boys high-school sports teams from the Sun Gazette’s coverage areas in state-championship games and matches on Saturday, June 11.
In all, the five local teams playing in Virginia High School League state title events that day all won – a perfect five for five.
The Yorktown High School girls lacrosse and soccer teams from Arlington won state championship about two hours apart on different fields.
At the same John Champe High School facility, the Madison High boys lacrosse and girls softball teams from Vienna captured Virginia crowns, as well, about 20 minutes apart.
The Langley High boys soccer team from McLean won a state title in overtime to cap the championship day.
Plus, two days earlier, the Langley girls and Oakton boys won Class 6 state tennis team titles.
There also were individual state champions in tennis and track and field last week from the Sun Gazette’s area.
It was a week like no other during the spring sports campaign.
