Not long ago, Saturday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend were big baseball and girls softball playoff days in the local region high-school tournaments.
Quarterfinal, or maybe semifinal games, were played that day, often at common sites where many fans were on hand to watch multiple games. It was a long-running tradition to play on those days that so many enjoyed and appreciated.
But that’s no longer, unfortunately. Only one region playoff game, and that’s because of graduation conflicts, was played on Memorial Day Monday this season. That was a softball game.
These days, for reasons not completely understood, Saturdays and Mondays are now deemed off limits for such playoff games. Instead, such region playoff games are now played at higher seeds, throughout the competitions. That means many games are played at the same times at different venues, making it impossible for those wanting to watch multiple games at one neutral site.
Wish things would return to the past, and maybe that is in the works. There are upcoming discussions planned to return, at least baseball, to those once Memorial Day traditions.
Hope those talks happen soon and the switch back happens in time for next season.
We’ll see what happens.
