Not too many years ago, it was very common for multiple local newspapers to be present covering various local postseason high-school sporting events.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case any longer. Because some local papers have gone out of business or eliminated their sports coverage, many big regular-season games and playoff showdowns go uncovered.
The Sun Gazette still covers many such contests and events, as many as possible. But often the Sun Gazette now is the only paper present. And that’s been the case for a while, even in regular-season action, as well.
The Washington Post has significantly cut back its high-school sports coverage in Northern Virginia.
Some good Websites have been created in recent years that cover prep sports, and do a good job. But traditional newspaper coverage it is not.
Unfortunately, the limited newspaper coverage of those local high-school sports likely won’t improve.
Times have changed, and that’s too bad.
