Sports Notebook: Friday night lights

Must Read

After an opening week with high-school football games played on untraditional nights, the week-two schedule (in some cases the third game for a few teams) has a full slate of the much traditional Friday night lights contests on tap.

It’s about time.

Since the fall season was postponed because of the pandemic, there haven’t been any local Friday night prep footballs for more than a year.

Tonight’s March 5 schedule includes one big neighborhood showdown with the Oakton Cougars hosting the Madison Warhawks in a 7 p.m. all-Vienna clash. The contest usually draws huge crowds with loud cheering student sections.

That won’t be the case tonight with the number of spectators limited because of the pandemic. So the game won’t be nearly as much fun and have the same atmosphere without the large crowd and those crazy students.

But at least it will be a real return to Friday night lights.
