Sports Notebook: Friday night lights

Must Read

It’s here. Some golf competitions already have been played.

But the 2021-22 high-school sports season begins in full this coming Friday night, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. when area varsity football teams kick off their schedules with opening regular-season games that count.

Also this week, girls field hockey and volleyball matches are being played, and the cross country teams are preparing to begin their fall campaigns.

So it’s finally back to normal for high-school sports in Northern Virginia after a year’s worth of delays, postponements and shortened and condensed seasons because of COVID, at least for now and let’s hope that continues.

We’ll see what happens in coming days, with Friday night lights kicking all of that off this coming week.
