Sports Notebook: First games

Must Read

Kind of like the first couple of football games of a high-school season when teams tend to have more penalties, turnovers and sloppy play, the same often happens in opening prep basketball action as well.

High-school teams are opening their seasons this week, so don’t be surprised to see lofty turnover totals in those contests, with likely poor shooting percentages from the floor and foul line, as well, more fouling than usual, and general sloppy play.

That’s all normal and expected stuff, but sometimes those trends go the other way in early contests, as teams shoot at a blistering pace.

Also, sometimes teams substitute a lot more during early-season outings as the players are still rounding into basketball shape.

We’ll see what happens in the next few days.
