Sports Notebook: Fence banners

Must Read

Placed on the inside portion of fences of some area high-school baseball and softball fields these days, various banners hang and clutter those railings.

The banners have become popular in recent years. Many are advertisements from local businesses. Others are championship pennants from titles the teams won over the years. No reason not to promote that fact. And others are just homemade banners promoting the home team.

The photo with this blog is one of those home-made banners, and quite attractive, made by the McLean High School girls softball team.

Many outfield fences, though, still have no banners at all.

The banners can be a bit of an eyesore if there are too many at one field gathered in one spot.

The banners, though, also work nicely as a way of identification, like when school nicknames are fastened to the fence, like Warhawks Baseball or Yorktown Baseball.

Basically, fence banners are now a part of high school baseball and softball.
