Facing elimination in a first-round state tournament girls softball game, the McLean Highlanders responded in an impressive manner when they fell behind the host Robinson Rams, 3-2, after three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, the McLean bats exploded to score eight runs and take a lead it would maintain in an eventual 15-6 victory in the Virginia High School League Class 6 contest. Taylor Staats started the rally with a two-run homer, then Elise Walker added a two-run double.
Before the half inning ended, Gaby Colder, Macey Johnson and E.K. Templer also had RBI hits. McLean led 10-3 when the rally ended.
The Highlanders obviously came ready and eager to hit during the outing. The team’s first five batters of the contest all swung and made contact with first pitches in the top of the first inning.
Johnson was one of those hitters with a two-run double, as McLean led 2-0 after one frame.
In all, McLean amassed 19 hits in the win, and those important eight big response runs in the top of the fourth.
