Sports Notebook: Big leads

Must Read

The Madison Warhawks have established a common and consistent theme in the high-school football team’s dominating victories in its four playoff games, with a fifth and final awaiting in the Dec. 11 Class 6 state championship contest.

The 13-1 Warhawks have built overwhelming leads in all four, winning 35-6, 48-0, 35-7, 28-6. In the three games that opponents did score, the garbage-time touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter, after Madison already had completed its scoring and wrapped up the victory with its shutdown defense and balanced offense.

Another impressive Madison statistic was the very slight 15 rushing yards (some stat keepers had fewer than that) South County managed in the Warhawks 28-6 state-semifinal victory. They had minus-one yard on the ground in the first half.

Thirteen straight opponents have found scoring and moving the ball quite difficult against Madison’s physical defense.

We’ll see if that continues in the state final when Madison plays high-scoring and defending champion Oscar Smith.
