It’s always fun to watch when big crowds gather at some outdoor high-school sporting event, when there are more fans than stands, where the spectators gather trying to sneak a peek at the action.
That was the case the night of May 20 when the McLean Highlanders hosted the Yorktown Patriots in the Liberty District tournament championship baseball game. Baseball bleachers usually have just a limited amount of seats. So others gather in all kinds of spots, like squeeze against fences down by the left and right-field lines.
Sometimes they try to peek over the outfield fence, maybe standing on the hood or tops of cars or in the back of a pickup truck. Others stand on the top of storage sheds until told to get down.
Others were sitting on the top of a wood fence bordering a classroom trailer. Many more were wedged behind McLean’s big backstop, watching from the wooded area behind the first-place stands and some watched from atop the pressbox.
Basically, fans gathered at any spots where they could see the action.
