Sports Notebook: A popular race on tap

Must Read

Good news. The annual and popular Arlington County high-school girls and boys cross country meets are normally run in October.

That didn’t happen during the fall because of the pandemic, when the entire fall high-school sports seasons were postponed until March and April, with each sport having a significantly reduced schedule.

As a result of those reductions, it wasn’t initially known if the annual county meet would be held with the new setup. Now it will.

The running date is Wednesday, March 17, probably at the usual Bluemont Park venue starting in the late afternoon. If not Bluemont Park, then the meet will be run somewhere.

The Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown girls and boys varsity teams will be competing. It’s not yet known if the private-school Bishop O’Connell teams will join the meet as usual.

The details are still being worked out, but the good news is the county meet will occur, even if it’s run on a high-school track.

So glad that popular all-Arlington sports event hasn’t been lost in the pandemic scheduling.
