Every spring it gets worse, with the fabulous vocals of the late Luther Vandross unfortunately heard less and less.
For years, minutes after the final game of the men’s NCAA Division I basketball tournament televised on CBS sports, the song “One Shining Moment” has been played with a recording of Vandross singing to a collage of entertaining basketball action videos and crowd scenes from the week-long March Madness event.
Each year now, instead of listening to Vandross’ wonderful vocals, there has become way too much screaming voice overs from the various play-by-play announcers, mainly Jim Nance. Heck, we almost hear more Nance than Vandross, and that’s a shame.
Nance is terrific at what he does. But his constant voice cheapens that fun tradition of One Shining Moment when Vandross should be heard all by himself. And that used to be the case.
So going forward, let’s not cheapen the moment and ruin a wonderful song anymore. Much more Vandross and far less Nance.
