Sports Notebook: A different kind of rivalry

Must Read

In all sports, there are certainly big rivalries within high-school districts and leagues, but there are other such bragging-rights clashes between different conferences as well.

That’s the case among four football teams in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference where the Paul VI Catholic Panthers and Bishop Ireton Cardinals are members and the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference where the Potomac School Panthers and Flint Hill Huskies call home.

Those teams have met a few times over the recent years with mixed results.

Last fall, Paul VI defeated both Flint Hill and Potomac School by lopsided scores in football games, and has already downed Flint Hill again this season.

Also in 2021, Potomac School defeated Bishop Ireton.

This coming Saturday, Sept. 24 in an 11 a.m. clash, Potomac School hosts Bishop Ireton. The winless Cardinals (0-3) certainly would like to earn a revenge victory over undefeated Potomac School (2-0).

Paul VI and Potomac School then meet on Oct. 8 in another WCAC versus MAC showdown this fall.

We’ll see what happens, and if the WCAC teams sweep MAC rivals this season.
