Sports Notebook: A dark night ahead

Must Read

Here’s a factual football note.

Not only will Friday night lights be totally dark in Arlington this coming evening of Sept. 16  for varsity high-school football games, none of the county’s four teams will play a home game this weekend. All four teams – the Bishop O’Connell Knights, Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots – play road games this Friday night.

Private-school O’Connell most often plays Saturday afternoon contests, but not this week. The Knights play Friday at 7 p.m. at John Carroll High in Bel Air, Md. Wakefield plays at Centreville on Sept. 16, W-L is at West Springfield and Yorktown is at Oakton. Those three contests also kick off at 7 p.m.

It’s rare that all four Arlington football teams play road games the same weekend, leaving the county totally dark of varsity contests for a weekend. So it will be a Friday night off from such hometown action this weekend, unless interested spectators hit the road to find some Friday night footbal lights shining and game action.
