Sport Notebook: State tourney begins

Must Read

Weather permitting, the American Legion state baseball tournament begins this afternoon, July 26 in Arlington with two 4 p.m. games at Barcroft Park and Wakefield High School. Two more contests follow at 7 p.m. on the same fields.

Opening ceremonies are at 3:45 p.m. on Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.

The eight-team double-elimination competition is scheduled to last through Friday, July 29, with the championship game at 4 p.m. at Barcroft and a playback contest, if necessary, at 7 p.m. at the same site. The winner advances to the Mid-Atlantic region tournament.

The state Legion tourney is being played in the Arlington and Fairfax County areas of Northern Virginia for the first time since the early 1990s, when the event was held at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax.

There are four local teams in the state tournament this year because teams from other areas of the state dropped out or didn’t field teams this summer. So the tournament will have a big local flavor.

Those four local teams are host Arlington Post 139, District 17 tournament champion Vienna Post 180, Fairfax Post 177 and McLean Post 270.

We’ll see what happens.
