In light of this winter’s first major snowstorm, which began pummeling the region Jan. 3, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials encourage local residents to take safety precautions if they are going to shovel snow.
It is important to consider your physical limitations, officials said. Snow shovelers should wear weather appropriate gear to keep themselves warm and only shovel snow if they are physically able to do so.
Residents should proceed slowly when shoveling snow, as heavy, wet snow especially can put a major strain on people’s hearts. Shovelers should move only small amounts of snow with each pass, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks, officials said.
