Registration runs through Aug. 31 for the 40th-anniversary Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, to be held Sept. 10-24 at venues across the region.
“Hundreds of seniors are registering,” said Herb Levitan, who chairs the non-profit organization overseeing the competition.
He noted that more than 70 individual events will be hosted at 29 different venues.
“In 1982 [when the program started], there were far fewer events being offered and only a couple hundred participants,” Levitan said.
New for 2022 is weight-lifting competition for both men and women, being offered in three events – back squat, shoulder press and dead lift. Other events run the gamut from diving and racquetball to crossword puzzling and pickleball.
Registration is open to those who will be 50 years or older by Dec. 31. The cost is $20, which includes unlimited events (a few events require small surcharges).
