Police: Employees, alleged thief spar over return of merchandise

On Jan. 10 at 12:42 p.m., two employees of a business in the 1000 block of South Hayes Street observed an individual select and conceal merchandise, then leave without paying, police said.

The employees confronted the suspect, retrieved the items and were walking back to the business when the suspect followed, assaulted the employees and attempted to take back the merchandise, police said.

Arriving officers took the suspect – 30-year-old Jerry Hunter of Marlboro, Md. – into custody. He was charged with robbery, two counts of possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance, identity theft and public intoxication. An outstanding warrant from Fairfax County also was served.
