The Madison Warhawks took a big step toward winning the Concorde District football championship for the second straight season with a key Oct. 15 victory.
Madison downed the host Centreville Wildcats, 21-17, for its sixth streak win to improve to 6-1, 2-0. The teams entered the game tied for first place.
Madison led from start to finish. Momentum began for the Warhawks following Ryan Salvosa’s third-down sack of the Centreville quarterback, forcing a punt. With possession, Madison put together a 6-minute, 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a three-yard scoring run by Alex Jreige and Connor Sevy’s conversion for a 7-0 lead with 9:08 left in the second quarter.
After a Centreville field goal, a 99-yard kickoff return by John Hurley and a Jreige two-point conversion run upped the Warhawks’ lead to 15-3 with 2:48 left in the first half. The lead swelled to 21-3 and put Madison in control thanks to a 12-play, 74-yard march consuming 8:21 on the first possession by any time in the second half when Barry scored on a run.
Centreville rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Jreige rushed for 112 yards for Madison and quarterback Connor Barry for 105. Barry was 4 of 8 passing for 40 yards.
Madison’s offensive line was anchored by Tyler Whittle, Mitchell Gardner, Ciaran Sullivan, Grant Boody, Kevin Gaston and Edrees Noory.
On defense for Madison, Hurley and Jamim Moore each made seven tackles; Austin Wysocki had two tackles, including a sack; Travis Allen had six assists; and Kevin Chadwick had a tackle for a loss.
Hurley had 63 yards in kick returns.
The remainder of Madison’s games are all against district rivals, including Chantilly, Westfield and the South Lakes Seahawks, who began the week with a 2-0 league mark.
Madison plays at Westfield (4-3, 1-1) on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
