A veteran state lawmaker has decided not to move forward on a measure that would have hit bicyclists in their pocketbooks when they didn’t follow established rules of the road.
State Sen. Thomas Norment (R-Williamsburg) had introduced legislation that would have imposed a $500 fine on the operator of a bicycle who was caught failing to stop at a stop sign.
But the bill went further; it also provided that the bicycle in question would be impounded for a period of six months.
But three weeks after dropping it into the hopper, Norment apparently had a change of heart. The measure was stricken at his request from the docket of the House Committee on Transportation.
