The Arlington County Republican Committee did not field a contender for County Board, but is inviting the three independents on the Nov. 2 ballot to come and make their case.
Independents Mike Cantwell, Audrey Clement and Adam Theo have been invited to participate in the Sept. 28 meeting, to by held at the Crystal City Sports Pub.
“We are in the process of soliciting feedback from Arlington Republicans” on whether the party should support a candidate in the race, said Matthew Hurtt, communications chair for the Arlington GOP.
Republicans last backed a County Board candidate in the July 2020 special election won by Democrat Takis Karantonis. This fall, Karantonis is seeking a full four-year term.
In 2014, Republicans (and the Arlington Green Party) formally supported the candidacy of independent County Board candidate John Vihstadt, who that year first won a special election necessitated by the resignation of Democrat Chris Zimmerman, then won the subsequent November general election for a four-year term.
In 2018, Vihstadt did not seek formal GOP or Green support in his bid for re-election. He lost that race to Democrat Matt de Ferranti.
At their Sept. 28 meeting, Republicans likely will discuss whether to offer an opinion on the four local bond referendums on the ballot. Democrats have endorsed all four bond questions.
