Editor’s Notebook: Ya gotta love politicians!

Must Read

A left-leaning friend of mine took umbrage at a dinner gathering Saturday evening at Nam Viet restaurant in Clarendon when I referred to a certain Democratic member of Congress — given the nickname “Shifty” by Donald Trump — as “a pig.”

She shouldn’t take it to heart, I told my friend; I think most members of Congress, of both parties and all stripes, are in it, trough-like for themselves rather than for the country. (Not talkin’ about you, Don Beyer; you’re OK in my book.) Calling politicians “pigs” is indeed perhaps unfair … to the pigs, that is.

And speaking of “the rules are for thee and not for me” mentality, here is a headline from Yahoo (not exactly a right-leaning source) of yesterday: “Gavin Newsom takes vacation to Montana — one of 22 states that California bans state-funded travel due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies.”

(Whoa, that’s a long headline … but kudos for including my favorite punctuation: the em-dash!)

Yep, California’s Gov. Nussolini, as critics call him, decamped from the cesspool that once lived up to its nickname the Golden State to enjoy the nice weather and fine people of Montana. His excuse for going there himself when he bans state-funded travel: Hey, I was paying my own way, not using state funds. Lame? Why yes, it is.

It appears that Newsom is another of the approximately 13,500 Democrats mulling a 2024 presidential bid, once Joe Biden takes the hint in November and bails out of a re-election run. Hard to believe Newsom could be so self-delusional to think America would embrace him, but as is abundantly clear, stranger things have happened in recent years.
