It’s been a looooooooong three years (anyone disagreeing with that assessment?), but this past weekend brought a nice semblance of normalcy to the local area.
After having been canceled in 2020 and 2021, the student-exchange that each fall since 1994 has brought students and their parents from the Sister City of Aachen, Germany, to Arlington is back.
A big crowd gathered at Nottingham Elementary School, where our own Deb Kolt was on hand to chronicle the event in photographs, as a celebratory breakfast kicked off the week’s events.
(Fun fact: Want to make fast friends with German fifth-graders? Put out a plate of doughnuts, which they seemed to love as much as their American counterparts, Deb noted.)
Arlington students will return the visit as Aacheners extend hospitality next spring.
Never taken part in one of these exchanges, but I have been to Aachen (twice!) and it is well worth visiting if you find yourself in that neck of Europe.
Glad to have you back, our friends from across the sea! And hopefully exchanges with other Arlington Sister City communities will follow, too.
