Must Read

One of the best stories each graduation season revolves around the students who living in AHC Inc.’s affordable apartment communities, who are paired with mentors during their last two years of high school and often find themselves accepted at some great colleges and universities, from Harvard and Yale to Northern Virginia Community College.

(And yep, I consider NVCC, or “NOVA” if you prefer that way instead, a great educational institution both on its own merits and as a stepping-stone to future endeavors.)

Many if not most are the first in their families to go to college, and many come from immigrant communities where the idea of American exceptionalism and meritocracy remains a cornerstone principle.

Celia Slater of AHC was super-helpful (as always) in getting this story together for us, and she’s responsible for the solid photos. You can find a slide show of those photos HERE and we’ll have the coverage coming up in a day or so.

A MODERATE DEMOCRAT (YAY!) CHECKS IN: Former governor and senator Chuck Robb is out with an autobiography, and our own Brian Trompeter sat down with him for a Q&A last week.

Always good to hear what some of the elder statesmen of either party have to say about the current and arguably discombobulated state of political affairs. (Robb is 83, but he’s as sharp as ever.)

Coverage is coming up.

NEW CROP OF NURSES GETS PINNED: We also have coverage online on the Marymount University “pinning ceremony,” which welcomes newly graduated nurses into their esteemed profession. (And trust me, I have great respect for nurses!)

You learn something new in this job every day. Turns out that while the pinning ceremony is about a century old at U.S. colleges and universities, it actually has roots going back 10 times as long – back to the Crusades, as a matter of fact. And you can read all about it in our article.
