Editor’s Notebook: Smoke’em if you got’em

Must Read

It’s summertime so let’s dip one more time into the archives of the Northern Virginia Sun, dialing it back to this week in 1971.

A new survey of America’s high-schoolers was out that week, and it appears that 29% of boys and 27% of girls acknowledged smoking regularly. (Smoking what, exactly, appears to not have been part of the survey.)

If anything, that number seems a little bit low for the early 1970s, although if we’re talking high-schoolers, one presumes there’s a big difference between your 14-year-olds and your 18-year-olds. So maybe those overall percentages indeed are dead on.

Let’s not forget that even as late as when li’l Scotty was attending ol’ Herndon High School more than a decade later, there were still “smoking courts’ outdoors for students who wanted to light up when out of class.

I was more a joker than a smoker or a midnight toker, myself. But whatever floats your boat.

I CANNOT WAIT: I must say, seldom have I been more anticipating an edition of the Falls Church News-Press than I have this week’s. I simply cannot wait to see what Nick Benton says about the raid on the home of Donald “the Don-Don” Trump.

Supporters of Trump should be thankful it wasn’t worse. If it had been back in the day, Janet “The Waco Kid” Reno might have been in charge of the raid, which might on her watch have been called “Operation Flambé.”

Which reminds me of this story from my childhood, when some friend of my mother went to a dinner party and my mother asked how it had gone. “It was a Joan of Arc dinner,” the other lady responded. “What’s a ‘Joan of Arc dinner’?” my mother said, walking right into it. “Everything was burned to a crisp,” the lady responded.

(I’d like to apologize to all my fellow Catholics and meat-eaters out there for that one… neither burnt steak nor being burnt at the stake is something to be joking about.)

But back to the News-Press. Don’t let me down, Nick. I need a full-throttle column this week!
