Editor’s Notebook: Four to go!

Must Read

I was just old enough to have the very dimmest of memories of the 1976 Bicentennial celebration (living in the suburbs of Philadelphia at the time, one couldn’t escape it). So it is making me feel old indeed to note that today marks four years to go (if we individually and collectively get there) to the nation’s 250th birthday.

Anyone remember who the top U.S. governmental leader of the Bicentennial effort back in the 1970s was? It was John Warner, before he won election to the U.S. Senate.

Warner headed ARBA, the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. No relation to either Arby’s (love those roast-beef sandwiches) or ABBA (so many groovy songs).

Can’t say I know much about the planning for the 250th anniversary, which one presumes was ever so slightly derailed – as was everything – by COVID. Let’s hope was can have some decent, positive yet still balanced events to mark the day when it comes in 2026.

ALWAYS THE STRANGEST, YET MOST FITTING, OF COO-INKY-DINKS: Let us not forget that today also marks the 196th anniversary of the deaths of both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the one-time bitter rivals who ultimately reconciled, living to make it to exactly the 50th anniversary of the nation’s independence.

Heck, the rivalry between Adams and Jefferson (and the partisans on each side) made the Trump-Clinton contretemps of 2016 look like a picnic in the park by comparison. If those Founding Fathers could find their way to establish rapprochement in their dotage, shouldn’t Clinton and Trump be able to do so in theirs, too?

Rhetorical question.
