Editor’s Notebook: Arlington, home of the whopper

Must Read

Whoa, whoa, whoa, that’s some big bond package the Arlington County Board is slated to approve this afternoon and, following the signature of Circuit Court Judge William Newman Jr. making it all nice and legal, send to voters in the fall.

Over $510 million spread across six bonds, making up for lost time since the county government ever so briefly tapped the brakes on capital spending in the early part of the COVID era. (Somebody alert Dr. Fauci: Arlington officials with this whopper of a bond package have signified the pandemic is ooooooooooooover!)

Since Fairfax County is five times the size of Arlington in terms of population, the A-town bond package is the equivalent of a $2.5 billion spending proposal going to voters in Fairfax. Don’t think the supervisors in F-town have ever done that.

Ah well, now we know why the Arlington County Board didn’t cut real-estate tax rates like just about every other Northern Virginia locality this year. They couldn’t. Like a junkie that needs a constant supply of heroin or fentanyl or the like, the Arlington government needs a constant supply of resident cash to keep its capital-projects pipeline moving along.

Good thing, bad thing? Who really can tell. One thing’s for sure – voters aren’t going to care. The bonds will receive 70 to 80 percent approval at the polls. Because bond funding is “free money,” after all.

Well ….. not so much.

CHESTERBROOK BACK ON TOP: We’ve got coverage online and coming up in print on the final week of the 2022 Northern Virginia Swimming League regular season.

In Division 1, it was Chesterbrook over Tuckahoe in an all-McLean clash for the crown on Saturday morning. Having lost to Tuckahoe last year, Chesterbrook redeemed itself to claim the crown in the premier district.

Anyone with a long memory of the local-media scene will remember that the Journal Newspapers (RIP) kept circulation up over the summer months with extensive coverage of NVSL and other swimming leagues. Page after page of results on Mondays. Good times.
