Democrats set vote on School Board endorsement

Must Read

The Arlington County Democratic Committee on June 1 will decide whether to endorse a candidate for the School Board seat being left vacant by the retirement of Barbara Kanninen.

Bethany Sutton ended up being the only candidate to seek the endorsement (after another contender dropped out to run instead as an independent in the general election). As a result, the planned Democratic School Board caucus was canceled and replaced with a straight up-or-down vote at the meeting, slated for 7 p.m. at Lubber Run Community Center.

Odds strongly favor Sutton getting the endorsement, which in turn makes her almost assured of election in November. Even if turned down by the Democrats, she still could run as an independent.

Kanninen, who currently serves as School Board chair, opted not to seek a third four-year term, becoming the fourth of five School Board members to opt against continuing service over the past three years.

June 21 is the filing deadline for all candidates wishing to be on the November ballot.
