Church preps annual Middle Eastern food festival

Holy Transfiguration Melkite Greek-Catholic Church will host its 29th annual Middle Eastern Food Festival on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4, at the church, 8501 Lewinsville Road in McLean.

The festival will feature authentic Middle Eastern food including kibbee, shish kebab, roast lamb, falafel, fattoush, hummus and stuffed grape leaves, along with Arabic pastries and coffee.

The event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, also will feature vendors, children’s activities and church tours. On Saturday at 6 p.m., a halfi (“party” in Arabic) will feature live music and dancing, including instruction in the dabke traditional folk line dance.

Holy Transfiguration is the local parish of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton, Mass. “Melkite” refers to Catholics whose ancestry is Middle Eastern and who follow the Byzantine tradition in worship, theology and spirituality.
