Additional financial support for Arlington County’s proposed west entrance to the Ballston-MU Metro station looks to be on the horizon.
A recommendation from staff at the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission puts the request for an additional $4.5 million near the top of the list for regional projects that would be part of fiscal 2023-24 funding through the “I-66 Commuter Choice” program.
That program uses funds collected from tolling on Interstate 66 to support projects that reduce congestion and shift commuters away from single-occupant vehicles.
The Metro-station funding is one of six requests totaling $12.4 million that have been recommended for approval by the regional transportation panel’s board. The funding would help to leverage significant amounts of additional funding, staff noted.
The Metro-station funding scored 90 on a 0-to-100 scorecard used to determine funding priorities. Others on the list recommended for approval include:
• $2.5 million for a parking garage at the Manassas Park Virginia Railway Express station. (Total score: 97)
• $2.56 million for renewal of OmniRide bus service from Gainesville to Pentagon and the Navy Yard. (83)
• $1.23 million for renewal of bus service from the Vienna Metro station to the Pentagon. (69)
• $948,000 for renewal of OmniRide bus service from Haymarket to Rosslyn. (64)
• $650,000 to reduce passenger costs on commuter-bus service from Prince William County to closer-in locations. (60)
Final action on the package is slated for coming months.
