They’d hoped for a better outcome last night, but members of the Arlington County Democratic Committee this evening will lick their wounds, dissect what went wrong statewide and focus on the future.
The party’s monthly rank-and-file meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School. It also will be broadcast online.
It is likely to be the morose such Democratic gathering since the November 2016 election of Donald Trump left part members thunderstruck. Since then, Democrats in Virginia have largely been on an upward trajectory, until voters across the commonwealth called a “time out” yesterday.
As predicted, Democrats had not problem with local raises, easily holding County Board and School Board seats and the four House of Delegates seats that include portions of Arlington. But at the state level, things were calamitous — it appears the party has lost all three statewide elected offices, as well, potentially, as control of the House of Delegates, which it had held the past two years.
