The 161st anniversary of the Skirmish at Ball’s Crossroads will be marked on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bluemont Park, 601 North Manchester St.
According to front-page coverage of the Sept. 1, 1861, edition of the New York Times, about 500 rebels (Confederate troops) attacked five companies of Union military personnel.
“For a few moments, fire was rapid on both sides” before the Confederate troops retreated, the correspondent noted, with a death toll of one on the Union side and approximately 15 on the Confederate side.
Park staff will lead a two-mile hike, following the path of Union troops and explain the engagement.
The event is free and open to all ages. For information and registration, see the Parks and Recreation portion of the county government’s Website at https://arlingtonva.us.
