The McLean area branch of the American Association of University Woman on June 2 presented three female Langley High School students with STEM Achievement Awards.
For the last nine years, the McLean Area Branch has partnered with counselors at local high schools to present the awards to female students finishing their junior year.
This year, Jenna Cai received an award for math, Abhaya Tyrka for science and Eliana LaFleur for computer science.
The McLean area branch instituted the awards to encourage young women to pursue educational opportunities related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
Criteria for the awards included a demonstrated record of overall academic success and a distinguished record of achievement in math, science, or computer science. A career-center counselor at the school manages the process of selecting the students.
Members of the group’s STEM Awards Committee who managed the high-school STEM Achievement Awards were Myrtle Hendricks-Corrales, Nina McVeigh and STEM Chair.man Judy Page.
McVeigh served as liaison to Langley High School and Hendricks-Corrales attended the school’s awards ceremony to present each student with a certificate of merit and a $100 check. All three students will be invited to a branch event in the fall for further recognition by members.
